The First Look, with Your Favourite People

Planning the first look with a parent or your bridal party is one of the photos that you just have to get on your wedding morning.

They are emotional, chaotic, loud, funny, teary, and completely full of love.

And unlike so many parts of a wedding day, these moments are usually totally unfiltered.

What is a Bridal First Look?

A bridal first look is simply a planned moment before the ceremony where someone special gets to see you fully ready for the first time.

That might be:

  • your dad seeing you in your dress
  • your mum helping you into your veil
  • your bridesmaids turning around together
  • your children seeing you dressed up

And I promise you… the reactions are often priceless.

Why I Love These Moments So Much

Wedding mornings can feel BUSY.

Hair spray everywhere.
Music playing.
People looking for shoes.

But a first look creates a tiny pause in the middle of all that.

A moment where everyone stops.

And those are often the moments people remember most.

The second your dad’s face changes when he sees you.
Your bridesmaids screaming.
Your mum getting emotional but trying not to cry because she’s worried about her makeup.

It’s real emotion. And that always photographs beautifully.

A first look also gives you a chance to properly connect with your favourite people before the whirlwind of the ceremony begins.

Without 100 guests watching.

Without needing to rush.

Without everyone immediately pulling you in different directions.

It can actually make the whole morning feel calmer and more intentional.

One thing I always tell couples and families is this:

Not everyone reacts in the same way.

Some people cry instantly.
Some people scream.
Some people go quiet.
Some dads suddenly become VERY interested in the weather outside instead of making eye contact.

And all of those reactions are perfect.

The best photos come from genuine emotion — not forced emotion.

Little Tips for the Best First Look Moments

A few things that help:

  • choose a space with good natural light if possible
  • keep the room relatively uncluttered (but don’t worry I will tidy!)
  • allow a little extra time in the morning
  • don’t overcrowd the moment with too many people
  • let everyone react naturally without pressure

My Favourite Part?

It’s usually what happens after the first look.

The hugs.
The laughter.
The “OH MY GOD YOU LOOK AMAZING.”
The fixing of dresses.
The happy tears.
The chaos starting all over again afterwards.

Those in-between moments are pure gold.

And they tell such a huge part of your story.
